COMPARISON OF ACT TAPE SYSTEM
WITH PETROLATUM TAPE
1. Summary
At our company, from the experience
to research for corrosion protection, And actual experience at plant equipments
for waterproof efficiency and corrosion protection is utilized, in order to be
able to supply most suitable products for corrosion protection and the
waterproof whose reliability is high in the user, the developed Product is our
ACT tape system.
There are several types as anti-
corrosion materials. Among these materials, there are two types of tape
materials, resin hardening type and petrolatum type.
The petrolatum type tape is made
from materials ,which are mixed with paraffin WAX and the mineral oil etc, and
it is corrosion protection and the waterproof material. However, it does not
harden after installation.
Resin hardening type like our ACT
tape system is mixed with various pigments into the resin, and it is the
waterproof and corrosion protection material. It is hardened after
installation.
Here is reported of comparison of the
corrosion protection and water proof between the ACT tape system and the
petrolatum type tape.
2. Comparison with the ACT tape system
and petrolatum type tape In various corrosion preventive materials, after 3
years. These are appeared
In many differences in the efficiency
such as weather resistance, corrosion resistance, heat resistance and abrasive
resistance, and chemical resistance.

It is the non-polluting type corrosion-proof pigment which the heavy
metal is not included

Because reduction of the solvent component is assured, it contributes to
also work environment improvement.

Installation characteristic is good due to the development of the
superior tape foundation, also installation mistake becomes very a few.

development of the compound of uniqueness combination and the primer

Due to keep elastic force, the crack of expansion on the corrosion-proof

the single wrapping or single sticking can be selected in according to
environment situation. Even in such case, high corrosion-proof efficiency can be
kept and it becomes cost reduction.

There is the weak point in this tape system. In winter season, it
becomes hard and the adhesive power becomes lower. The installation works become
not easy.
In summer or
in high temperature situation, the oil content in the petrolatum tape flows out.
Therefore, the durable years service life is short ( usually 3—5 years) in
comparison
with resin hardening type( ACT tape system).

As initial cost, the corrosion-proof cost of the petrolatum system is
cheap in comparison with resin hardening type. However, the maintenance cost is
necessary
in 3 to 5
years interval..

In case of the long-term corrosion protection by the petrolatum system,
the wrapping protective material becomes necessary, and it becomes more
expensive
than resin hardening type.

At the vertical surface of steel pipes or facilities, the power of close
adhesion is weak and the corrosion occurs at the flaked place due to water
inserting.
3. Conclusion
From the above comparison and our past
experiences , it is sure that the ACT tape system have better anti-corrosion and
waterproof than the petrolatum type tape.
Furthermore, we execute exposure test in
the refinery plant and the laboratory test.
Exposure test
Petrolatum type tape: With lapse of time and in
especially summer season, the oil content flows out into the lower part of
wrapped facility. The tape in the upper parts
become dry situation and it becomes easy to absorb moisture.
There was a place where
adhesion of the tape is lost and has exfoliated. Because it is soft, there
was the place where the tape was damaged weakly by external impact
ACT tape system: There was no
circumstance like the petrolatum type tape and it maintained sufficiently
corrosion protection efficiency.

Method of
exam: the ACT tape and the petrolatum type tape
are stuck
And make cross-cutting
on the central parts of the test piece by
Knife. On the such
situation, multiple cycle test was carried out.
The cycle test is salt
water spraying test, moisture test and drying test
and it is applied in
JASO M609.610. This test method was developed
and adopted by major
automobile makers, paint makers and test
equipment makers in
Japan. The test method have high reliability..

The condition of the salt water
spraying/moistening/drying test is as follows.
The test was carried out with 3
cycle executions in one day under the following
Condition
and the test period was 4 months.
Salt water spraying (2h/35/5%)
ห
moistening (4h/60/20~30%RH)
ห
drying (2h/50/>95%RH)
Relation of this test with actual environment : 180
cycles test ( 2 months)
Is equivalent to 1.5 year period in the Okinawa
environment.
Test period in this time : 360
cycles test (4 months) is equivalent to about
3 years at Okinawa
environmental situation.
Evaluation method of this test.
In this test method, to observe the proceeding speed
of the rust from the part of cross cutting, and to evaluate corrosion
resistance and adhesion property.
When the adhesion is inferior,
invasion of the water becomes fast.
When
corrosion resistance is inferior, growth of the rust occurs fast
The corrosion protective covering is expanded at
cross cut portion ,and, with invasion of the water, the rust expands in the part
of cross cutting.
It keeps doing.
Test result
From the above comparison and our
past experiences , it is sure that the ACT tape system have better
anti-corrosion and waterproof than the petrolatum type tape.
